ften considered the foundation of many cognitive assessments undertaken by clinical psychologists, the Wecshler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) is now in its fourth edition (2010). The new edition has been developed over a number of years for the following reasons: to ensure it is in line with current research; to update the standardisation for ages 16 – 90 years (previous edition – WAIS-III was published in 1997). WAIS-IV UK – What’s new?
ften considered the foundation of many cognitive assessments undertaken by clinical psychologists, the Wecshler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) is now in its fourth edition (2010). The new edition has been developed over a number of years for the following reasons: to ensure it is in line with current research; to update the standardisation for ages 16 – 90 years (previous edition – WAIS-III was published in 1997). Two subtests were dropped and three new sub-tests added.
What are the benefits of using the WAIS-IV?
New special group studies, co-normed with Wechsler Memory Scale-IV (WMS-IV); administration time reduced by 15% compared to WAIS-III; added teaching items; reduced vocabulary level for verbatim instructions; picture arrangement and object assembly have been dropped so there is less emphasis on motor demands; the test materials are now more portable and take less time to administer with improved scoring floors and ceilings, improved subtest and composite reliability.
The dual IQ score has now changed to an index score structure with four index scores (consistent with WPPSI-III and WISC-IV). There is a new measure of fluid intelligence, enhanced measures of working memory and improved measure of processing speed.
It is important to be using the most up to date version of a psychometric assessment so you are assessing against up to date norms and not using (in the case of WAIS-III) norms from 1997.
