WAIS-IV UK – What’s new?
ften considered the foundation of many cognitive assessments undertaken by clinical psychologists, the Wecshler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) is now in its fourth edition (2010). The new edition has been developed over a number of years for the following reasons: to ensure it is in line with current research; to update the standardisation for ages 16 – 90 years (previous edition – WAIS-III was published in 1997). Two subtests were dropped and three new sub-tests added.

A successful independent living trial
Joe, 20, sustained a severe traumatic brain injury aged 18 years as a car passenger in a RTA. He returned to live in Southampton with his parents and sister following 18 months in a residential rehabilitation placement.
His residual problems related to social/interpersonal difficulties, poor organisational/planning skills and intermittent periods of depression. Following referral to Clinical Neuropsychology by his case manager, initial psychological assessment of Joe and his family led to a recommendation for him to move into a rented flat with support workers providing 24 hour supervision and support. The Clinical Neuropsychologist worked closely with occupational therapy in delivering training and regular advice to the support work team, providing guidance in risk assessment/management and setting realistic domestic and social rehabilitation goals. Individual psychological therapy with Joe began to achieve far greater stability and improved self-management of his emotional state.
Within 4 months of the move, support work input had been reduced to 3½ days per week and Joe had commenced a part-time work placement at a local video rental store. Clinical Neuropsychology input now takes the form of regular monitoring and consultation with the rehabilitation team regarding goal planning, particularly focussing on Joe’s self-management of his financial affairs.
